LANY kicked things off, bringing their signature California dream pop to the eager Toronto crowd. Their woozy vibes completely won us over! These guys are definitely ones to watch:
UK darling AlunaGeorge strolled onto the stage with a cool confidence, unleashing a swagger completely teheir own. Running through her massive hits like “Attracting Flies” and the Disclosure collaboration “White Noise,” it was a completely dance party from front row to the back of the house. We can’t wait for their new album, I Remember, out September 16.
Haven’t heard of AlunaGeorge before? We caught up with Aluna backstage after the show + she gave us a quick UMUSIC 5: Five fun facts about her 🙂 Watch below:
Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweat‘s sing-alongs and mass crowd dance parties carried us through the afternoon. From the anthemic opening of “I Need Never Get Old” and closing with an explosive jam version of their massive hit “S.O.B.“, it was a full hour of euphoria that we’ll never forget.
Before they took the stage though, we sat down with Mark + Nathaniel to do the next best thing that festivals have to offer, after music of course, FOOD! Best part? Mark used to be a chef and was really able to give us some insight on the festival treats 🙂
The man from The New Toronto came to Wayhome to make a statement. Tory Lanez was nothing short of 100 on the energy level, powering through his cannon of hits at a blistering pace. Did the crowd ever stop jumping? No. No they did not.
Talking about Toronto music, Metric played tonight as well and long story short: they blew our mind. It’s not often that we see a woman fronted band, and Emily Haines takes on this title with beautiful ferocity. While it was in the second half of the day; and the sun was still beaming super hard — the crowd did not skip this one!
Chvrches‘ biting brand of synth-pop is perfect festival fodder–the huge choruses of singles like “Recover” and “Leave A Trace” resonated through the grounds. Lauren’s hilarious too–taking the time to penalty kick a wayward beach ball and compliment the custom flags in the crowd. It was the last Canadian date of this tour–so hopefully we’ll see this Scottish trio again soon!
Kicking up the energy to 1,000 was party brother duo Rae Sremmurd. It’s incredible to think of how hit-packed the past two years have been for Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee. They brought their bundle of bangers, and from “No Type” to “Blase”, the intensity did not let up. Seriously–how much caffeine are these two consuming?
Looking back at our day, it was hella long — but also absolutely incredible! It’s one thing to spend a weekend listening to music in your room on your comfortable bed, zoning out into a daze when your fave tracks come on. Festivals, are a whole different beast! Coming together with a million more music lovers, driving to a new area, setting up tents, boiling in the heat…and while it’s quite elaborate, it really is one of the best experiences you can ever have.
