Music Meets Film – Our Top TIFF Recommendations of 2016

Posted on September 08, 2016

As the summer rolls out, the red carpet rolls in.

Today marks the first day of Toronto’s International Film Festival. But TIFF isn’t just for film lovers.

Some of your favourite artists like Selena Gomez and Hailee Steinfield are shining from the stage to the big screen.

So if you happen to be in the 6 this week, check out our top six film recommendations for music and film lovers alike!

In Dubious Battle

Directed by James Franco and based on the novel by John Steinbeck, “In Dubious Battle” puts us in the midst of the dark struggles within the working class. Selena Gomez, who plays a young pregnant woman, co-stars with James Franco in another startling film.

Edge of Seventeen

Between her music and acting career, Hailee Stenfield keeps us smiling, and stars in a quirky yet touching film about life at seventeen. Hilarious, relatable, and unique, “Edge of Seventeen” is a guaranteed to be a great date night pick.

Rolling Stones Olé Olé Olé

Rock and roll hits a milestone. Performing for the very first time in Havana Cuba, join the Rolling Stones on their 2016 tour across Latin America. Featuring live performances of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, “It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll”, “Wild Horses”, “Honky Tonk Women”, “Sympathy For The Devil”, “Paint It Black” and “Miss You”, you’ll feel like you were really there.

Gimme Danger

If this name rings a bell, you must be a fan of Iggy. Stemming from “Gimme Danger” by Iggy Pop and the Stooges, the film follows their wild, destructive, and ultimately dangerous careers. Talk about sitting on the edge of your seat!

The Sixth Beatle

Considered the last un-told story of the Beatles, Sam Leach reveals his fascinating role as their former manager and promoter. Follow their chronicles to stardom as Sam takes you back to the very start, in a little town called Liverpool. A great pick for any true Beatles fan.

La La Land

The perfect fusion of film and music, our favourite duo Emma Stone (an aspiring actress) and Ryan Gosling (a jazz pianist) star in this bubbly, colourful, and romantic musical. It’s everything you wanted in an Stone and Gosling film.

TIFF is more than just the big screen. You can look forward to street festivals, concerts, and after parties throughout the week. We are super excited to check out Jillea, who will be performing on Friday Sept 8th at Festival Street for FREE!
