MEET: Dean Lewis, Australian Singer-Songwriter Who’ll Make You Feel Every Emotion

Posted on July 26, 2018

“Those things you think are weaknesses are actually your strengths”

28-year-old Dean Lewis is a singer-songwriter from Sydney, Australia who has the ability to evoke a plethora of emotions, sometimes simultaneously, through his touching music. Dean says he was inspired to pursue music from a young age after watching a live video of British band Oasis back in 2005.

Initially, Dean was working behind the scenes as a songwriter after a friend linked him to a woman who was in the music industry. After finding frustration rather than fulfillment while writing songs for other people, Dean linked up with two talented producers, Nick Atkinson and Edd Holloway, leading to his hit song “Waves”.

To say “Waves” took off is an understatement. The song was featured on popular television shows such as “Riverdale”, “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Suits” and amassed over 122 million streams. The single was also certified 3x platinum in Australia. The success of that single lead him to play in front of huge audiences across Europe, travel across both Australia and the United States to headline festivals and play a couple shows with pop songstress Sigrid.

Following the success of “Waves”, Dean has now released his latest tune called “Be Alright”. It’s the first song to be released in the lead up to his upcoming album and if the rest of the record is anything like this track, we’re all in for a treat.

Dean opened up about the meaning of the self-affirming song. Here’s what he had to say about it:

“I think a lot of people are in their rooms writing songs, thinking it’s not good enough or wondering why your voice doesn’t sound like everyone else’s. But those things you think are weaknesses are actually your strengths. It’s what makes you unique. And after a bit of time, it’s the thing that gives you confidence.”
