Lady Gaga, Queen, and Bohemian Rhapsody stole the show
The 2019 Academy Awards have come and gone, and it was a night to remember. The Oscars highlight the past year’s accomplishments in film, but it’s the musical aspect of the show that viewers are still talking about.
The Oscars began with a legendary performance from Queen and Adam Lambert. The band tore the house down, playing two of their most distinguished tracks, “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions”. They also honoured the late, great Queen frontman Freddie Mercury towards the end of the set. You can check it out here:
Queen’s unreal performance foreshadowed what would be a very successful night for the band – specifically for their acclaimed biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody. The film received five Academy Award nominations, and won a total of four, including Best Sound Editing and Best Film Editing.
Rami Malek, who wonderfully portrayed Freddie Mercury in the film, won the Oscar for Best Actor. In his acceptance speech, Rami had a message for Queen. “Thank you guys for allowing me to be the tiniest part of your phenomenal, extraordinary legacy”, he said. “I am forever in your debt.” You can check out Rami’s entire acceptance speech below:
Speaking of queens, Lady Gaga was also at the 2019 Academy Awards. Her film A Star is Born received eight Oscar nominations, including “Best Picture” and “Best Adapted Screenplay.” The film won an Oscar for “Best Original Song” for Lady Gaga’s song “Shallow.”
Later in the night, Lady Gaga (along with her A Star is Born co-star Bradley Cooper) emerged from the crowd and delivered a goosebump-inducing performance of “Shallow.”
