New Music Friday: Summer Walker, VALLEY, blackbear and more

Posted on July 10, 2020

Okay, New Music Friday’s are always epic, but something about this line up just hits different. It’s a big week in music ranging from indie, to pop, to rap and R&B! We’ve got everything from Summer Walker and Katy Perry, to Juice WRLD and July Talk. Happy Friday and happy streaming <3 !

Life on Earth (EP) by Summer Walker

Fresh off an amazing performance at the BET awards, Summer is making headlines once again with the drop of her latest EP, Life on Earth. The 5 track R&B project features 2 artists (including PARTYNEXTDOOR) and will likely be a staple in your late night drive playlist.

“Smile” by Katy Perry

It’s safe to say that 2020 has been a whirlwind for our girl Katy (who will be welcoming a new album and a newborn sometime soon). “Smile” embodies some of the trials and tribulations Katy’s faced, but the lyrics are steeped in gratitude and joy. The upbeat song is the title track of her forthcoming album and we’ll be obssessing over it until KP5 officially drops.

“Slurpee” by Zach Zoya

Zach Zoya dropped a refreshing new single, “Slurpee” and it’s already a summer staple. You HAVE to watch the trippy music video to get the full experience, but the song is a standalone hit. If the Montreal-based rapper isn’t already on your radar, now’s a great time to fix that.

“nevermind” by VALLEY

Hometown heroes, Valley are back with their new single, “nevermind”. The melancholy and apathetic lyrics paired up with the breezy sound create a dynamic track. According to the indie pop band , “nevermind” has been in the vault since last November, but good things are worth the wait.

Legends Never Die by Juice WRLD

It’s always bittersweet to receive a beautiful project after an artist’s passing. The title Legends Never Die could not be more accurate, and Juice WRLD’s legacy will live on through the celebration of his music. The posthumous album is available on all platforms and features appearances from Juice’s friends and collaborators like Halsey and Trippie Redd.

Pray For It by July Talk

If you needed another indication of how strong Toronto’s music scene is, this is it. The Canadian alt-rock group just dropped Pray For It, and the album features eleven songs, including “Pay For It” and “Governess Shadow”. Expect unique sounds that transcend genres and expectations while consecutively delivering.

“Call You Out” by Deryk

You heard it here first, New Zealand’s best kept secret has arrived and her name is Deryk. The 22-year-old singer has this special rasp and elusiveness to her voice that will literally have you mesmerized. Her sound is at the apex of intense, gritty and dreamy, and you’ll be craving more from the emerging artist after hearing her debut single, “Call You Out”.

“DYING 4 YOUR LOVE” by Snoh Aalegra

The queen of sultry sad-girl music is back. “DYING 4 YOUR LOVE” is the first solo release in months from the Swedish songstress. If you’re a fan of ethereal, rich, R&B (how could you not be), then Snoh’s music will quickly become a staple in your catalogue.

“queen of broken hearts” by blackbear

blackbear’s been paving his own lane in the alt hip-hop/sad boy rap scene since Tumblr days, and it’s amazing to see him still producing hits. It looks like dropping a heartbreak anthem every summer is going to be blackbear’s new niche. We’re still singing along to “Hot Girl Bummer“, but “queen of broken hearts” might be our new fave. Also, stay tuned for everything means nothing, a 2 part album from blackbear scheduled for 7/17 & 8/21.
