New Music Friday: J Balvin, Taylor Swift, Savannah Ré and more

Posted on July 24, 2020

Debut albums, surprise drops, band reunions and retirement announcements… it’s safe to say it’s been a big week in music. We know it can be hard to keep track of everything, so we’ve organized it all below! Also, check out this playlist for all of this summer’s hits.

“UN DIA” BY J BALVIN, DUA LIPA, BAD BUNNY AND TAINY

We have to applaud the sheer star power on this song. “Un Dia” (One Day) is a collaborative effort between Reggaeton icon J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny and Tainy. The expectations we had for this track were somehow surpassed, and we know you’ll love it as much as we do. The bilingual single is the latest from the Latin icon following the release of his album Colores (which is 2x Platinum btw). The smooth vocals are attached to a sound that fuses Latin Pop and house music making for a global mashup with a universal message of hope and heartbreak.

“WHERE YOU ARE” BY SAVANNAH RÉ

Savannah Ré lays it all out on “Where You Are”, the first single from her highly anticipated debut EP, Opia. “Where You Are” was inspired by Savannah’s frustration in being separated from her partner, and with social distancing still in place many of us can relate. After working with superstars like Babyface, Normani, TLC, and our girl Jessie Reyez, the multi-faceted singer-songwriter is ready for her time in the limelight. We can proudly state that she’s one of the most talented artists to emerge from Toronto’s music scene and R&B at large.

“folklore” BY TAYLOR SWIFT

Taylor Swift has surprised fans with her 8th studio album, folklore. On the 23rd of July, Taylor shared enchanting, foggy forest images with the following caption: “Most of the things I had planned this summer didn’t end up happening, but there is something I hadn’t planned on that DID happen. And that thing is my 8th studio album, folklore. Surprise 🤗 Tonight at midnight I’ll be releasing my entire brand new album of songs I’ve poured all of my whims, dreams, fears, and musings into. I wrote and recorded this music in isolation but got to collaborate with some musical heroes of mine.”

“NEVERMIND” BY HRVY

Preceding the drop of his forthcoming album, Can Anybody Hear Me, comes “Nevermind”, an electropop single from HRVY. The British sensation shared that he wrote the song last summer. The well crafted lyrics paint a vivid picture of a situationship that many have probably found themselves caught in. “Nevermind” has fans even more excited for HRVY’s album (which has been trending on iTunes and Twitter).

“CABIN FEVER” BY JADEN SMITH

Never has a New Music Friday post featured so many relatable songs. Jaden’s “Cabin Fever” is officially the new quarantine anthem. This song perfectly encapsulates summer 2020 while giving us classic Tumblr vibes (with high quality production value). Listen to this song with your eyes closed and we swear you’ll be transported to a scenic drive through Malibu during sunset.

“HOT” BY PIA MIA

Pia’s accomplished a lot since her 2015 hit, “Do It Again” like acting, authorship, curating an amazing Instagram feed, and accumulating over 1 billion streams worldwide (yes, billion with a b). Today, she adds another accomplishment to her roster with the release of “Hot”. The R&B pop princess shared the steamy summer bop she’s been working on and it is indeed a scorcher. It’s a tune about owning your sexuality and not shying away from raw chemistry. Pia plans on shooting some visuals in her home island of Guam, so stay tuned.

“NOBODY’S LOVE” BY MAROON 5

Today’s roster also includes a new single from a band that needs no introduction. The prolific pop-rock group debuted “Nobody’s Love” today which serves as the second single from their upcoming album. Frontman Adam Levine shared that the song’s intent was to spread some love and warmth during these seemingly bleak times. Honestly, we needed this. Bonus, the music video is also out now, and was shot by David Dobkin on an iPhone. The video director gave us epic visuals in the past to songs like “Girls Like You”, “Sugar”, and “Memories”.

“MY EX” BY ASHS

ASHS just dropped “My Ex” which finally gives the ladies a clapback to blackbear’s “Hot Girl Bummer”. The sultry pop song with R&B influences is the perfect thing to send to that ex who keeps asking for another chance. It’s a song that you’ll easily find yourself nodding and singing along to, plus the Instagram caption opportunities are endless.

JADE EAGLESON (ALBUM) BY JADE EAGLESON

Jade Eagleson, the self-titled debut album from this rising Canadian country artist is available now. Despite being a relatively new contender in the country scene, Jade is already making waves and breaking records. Songs like “Got Your Name On It” and “Lucky” have been resonating with fans, and the 85+ million global streams on GYNOI attest to that. Since Boots and Hearts is a bust this year we may just have to set up some tents in the backyard and blast this album through a speaker to get us through it (not a bad compromise tbh).
