New Music Friday: Jeremy Zucker & Chelsea Cutler, Luke Bryan, and more!

Posted on February 05, 2021

It’s February, and we have a lot of feelings. The shortest month of the year but it feels like the longest? Valentine’s Day? Cold weather? There’s a lot to unpack here. If you’re feelin’ down this down this winter season, we’ve got some new releases to perk you back up and carry you into spring! The groundhog predicted an early spring anyway, right? At least there’s hope!

While you’re here, check out this playlist to add a little ✨ pop ✨ to your life.

Death From Above 1979 “One + One”

Here at UMUSIC, we’ve heard that rock is back in a big way. Death From Above 1979 released this highly anticipated song on Wednesday, and fans agree it was worth the wait. “One + One” is three minutes and forty-nine seconds of pure energy paired with a love story. Does it get better than that?

Death From Above 1979 is a Canadian duo who has not released music since 2018. You might know their songs from soundtracks like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Letterkenny, and Asphalt 9: Legends.

Jeremy Zucker & Chelsea Cutler “brent ii”

Every generation has one great poet; ours has two. Ever since Jeremy Zucker and Chelsea Cutler released their EP, “brent” back in 2019, we have been patiently waiting for a new collection of songs to add to our “feels” playlist. While the two went their separate ways to record respective albums (so good, obviously), we’re relieved to hear they’re back again with a follow-up EP titled “brent ii,” featuring “emily,” a crushing song about a toxic and passionate love.

Cian Ducrot “Not Usually Like This”

Nick Miller

Ever heard a song so powerful, you didn’t know how to react? If the answer is yes, you’re not alone. Luckily, Cian Ducrot has a word of advice; when you listen to his new single “Not Usually Like This,” the best release is to “scream in your bedroom!” BRB, testing this theory.

Cian Ducrot is a 23 year-old singer-songwriter-tiktoker-heartthrob who is gaining traction fast, and rightfully so! Ducrot’s emotional storytelling comes naturally to him as he turned to music from a young age in difficult times. He taught himself how to write, sing, play a multitude of instruments, and produce his own music as a result. A self-made king, we love to see it.

Luke Bryan “Country Does”

The king of country-pop is baaaaaack! Although we can’t attend a backyard party ATM due to unforeseen circumstances (lockdown, plz end soon), we sure can pretend with “Country Does.” In this song, the Georgia-born singer takes time to appreciate the rural lifestyle’s grass-roots values. Luke Bryan always reminds us that you can take the man out of country, but you can’t take country out of the man!

Laurence Nerbonne “One Love”

According to Laurence Nerbonne, all we need is love to get through these times. In “One Love,” the Juno-winning francophone reminds us that we’re all in this together. The song was performed live for the first time on February 3rd, 2021 before the title was ever revealed.

Sam Fischer & Demi Lovato “What Other People Say”

What DO other people say about Sam Fischer and Demi Lovato’s new collaboration? Well, first of all; it was highly anticipated, so that’s good. Second, people are living for this honest self-reflection.

“What Other People Say” is Sam Fischer’s first project since he blew up in 2020, but his musical expertise is much more than meets the eye. Fischer has written songs for Ciara and Jennifer Hudson and released his first solo EP in 2016.
