31 JULY 2026 (TORONTO, ON) — DOMi & JD BECK – the GRAMMY-nominated jazz duo featuring keyboardist Domi Louna and drummer JD Beck – have released their highly anticipated 2nd studio album WHO ASKED? on Anderson .Paak’s APESHIT label in partnership with Blue Note Records. The album is available now on a multitude of formats including premium 180g black vinyl, color vinyl variants, CD, cassette, digital download, and all streaming platforms. The band has also announced a 25-city Fall U.S. tour that kicks off in their hometown of Dallas on September 8 and takes them from coast-to-coast. Tickets are on sale now at domiandjdbeck.com.
It’s been 4 years since the release of the duo’s acclaimed 2022 debut album NOT TiGHT which landed them on NPR Tiny Desk, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, as well as earning them two GRAMMY nominations including Best New Artist.
Somehow both simpler and more complex, WHO ASKED? foregoes the rollcall of special guests that illuminated NOT TiGHT yet features even more contributors including a small sinfonietta of seasoned classical players who help bring the duo’s incredibly singular, super maximalist and strikingly beautiful orchestral vision to life. Featuring vocals by Domi and JD throughout, it might almost resemble chamber pop if chamber pop had 50 times as many notes, shifty time signatures and an overall vibe of jazz-born indietronica cut with verdant flower-child freedom.
“This time around we felt like we had a pretty sharp idea of what we wanted the album to be before even starting,” say Domi and JD. “We wanted it orchestral, fully written out before even playing one note, with stronger songwriting intentions but just as crazy playing-wise and harmony-wise. We just wanted every note to mean something, and nothing left to chance.”
It began when DOMi & JD BECK were asked to play a series of dates backed by Holland’s mighty Metropole Orkest. They had to orchestrate NOT TiGHT, fast, using the music notation software Sibelius. “We’d never had the challenge/opportunity to write for that many different instruments and sonic textures before, and that really opened our minds to a totally different way of writing.” They’ve long preferred writing from their heads, on anything other than their core instruments, to avoid the influence of muscle memory. But this approach bypassed physical limitations (arms, legs, instrument types) altogether. For WHO ASKED?, “Every single note was written that way, and it was extremely fun to learn how to play our own songs after!”
The decision to sing came naturally when they realized that they were writing typical pop song structures. “The human voice is the oldest instrument and the most direct way to connect,” say Domi and JD, so they approached it indirectly, of course, penning lyrics inspired by scenes from a film script that they wrote and then never shot. The resulting poetry possesses a strange magic, often forming a fractal that from different angles resembles words about love specifically, or life broadly, or the creative process writ large.
