Available September 18, When We Ruled: The Best of The Pursuit of Happiness includes original versions of the band’s hit singles like “I’m an Adult Now,” “She’s So Young,” and “Hard to Laugh,” alongside rare and previously unreleased material and two new recordings. The release features newly mastered audio pressed on 2LP 180g vinyl housed in gatefold packaging with two inner sleeves that feature band notes and photos.

This compilation draws from the band’s studio albums Love Junk (1988), One Sided Story (1990), The Downward Road (1993), Where’s the Bone? (1995), and The Wonderful World of The Pursuit of Happiness (1997). Thematically, the track ordering traces the Pursuit of Happiness’s progression from witty, youthful pop-rock anthems in the late 1980s to more mature, introspective material in the 1990s. This arc highlights the band’s shift from humorous, relationship-driven songs to explorations of personal growth and societal observation, culminating in the reflective close with the original “I’m an Adult Now.”
The Pursuit of Happiness line-up with founding members Moe Berg (Guitar/vocals), Dave Gilby (Drums) and alumni Kris Abbott (Guitars), Brad Barker (Bass), and Renee Suchy (Backing Vocals) are still active and touring, reinforcing their enduring legacy.

ABOUT THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
Formed in Toronto in 1985 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Moe Berg, the band gained initial attention with the independent release of the 12-inch single “I’m an Adult Now” in 1986, written by Berg the previous year, whose low-budget music video secured airplay on MuchMusic and CITY-TV, leading to Juno Award nominations for Most Promising Group and Best Video in 1987. Another independent single, “Killed By Love,” followed in 1988, building their reputation as a high-energy live act in Toronto’s club scene. The band’s breakthrough came with they signed to Chrysalis Records and released their debut album, Love Junk, produced by Todd Rundgren in 1988. The re-recorded version of “I’m an Adult Now” became a major hit, reaching number one on Canada’s RPM singles chart and earning platinum certification for the album in Canada, while also charting on the US Billboard Hot 100 and Alternative Airplay charts with sales exceeding 100,000 units. Their follow-up, One-Sided Story (1990), also produced by Rundgren, achieved gold status in Canada (50,000 copies) and continued touring success. In 1993, the band moved to Mercury Records for The Downward Road and then rounded out the ’90’s with two more albums on Iron Music, Where’s The Bone (1995) and The Wonderful World of The Pursuit of Happiness (1996).
