18 SEPTEMBER 2026 (TORONTO, ON) — Composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson announces ANANTA: Spirit Of Coltrane, an album honoring a lifelong influence during the year of John Coltrane’s 100th birthday. Atwood-Ferguson leads a 21-piece collective of musicians at the top of their craft, including Brandee Younger, Jeff Parker, Flying Lotus, Immanuel Wilkins, Shabaka Hutchings, Azar Lawrence, Joel Ross as well an original composition featuring words by poet Aja Monet. For more than three decades, Coltrane has occupied a singular place in Miguel Atwood-Ferguson’s imagination — a musician to admire, a master to study, and a guiding light. That relationship sits at the center of ANANTA: Spirit of Coltrane, a sweeping new meditation on Coltrane’s music and philosophy, featuring some of the most exciting voices in contemporary and improvised music. ANANTA is a document of gratitude, a tribute grounded in Coltrane’s spiritual legacy, reaching beyond jazz toward cosmic music.
ANANTA found its home at Impulse!, the label on which the legend released his most celebrated work. On purpose, Atwood-Ferguson deliberately avoided the kind of elaborate “reimagining” that can sometimes bury a beloved composition beneath layers of conceptual design. He didn’t want to demonstrate how far he could pull a Coltrane song away from itself. Instead, he wanted listeners to recognize the music while hearing what it might become when filtered through another generation of extraordinary musicians.
On ANANTA, that means balancing allegiance to Coltrane’s work with translating it to something current. Pieces including “A Love Supreme, Pt. II (Resolution),” “Central Park West” and “My Favorite Things” remain comparatively close to their original forms, trusting the musicians’ individual voices to reveal new dimensions in familiar material. Elsewhere, Atwood-Ferguson opens the music outward. “Naima” is reshaped while retaining traces of its original harmony and feeling, while “Giant Steps” — perhaps the most intimidating composition in Coltrane’s songbook — is transformed from a high-velocity showcase into a ballad, creating space for contemplation and emotional depth.
Atwood-Ferguson — perhaps best known for Suite for Ma Dukes, his landmark orchestral tribute to J Dilla — is a composer and arranger with the technical range to turn nearly anything inside out. But virtuosity is not his destination. “I’m not trying to impress people,” he says humbly. His larger ambition is more consequential: to make music soulful enough to move people toward a fuller understanding of themselves and their lives.
