22 APRIL 2015 (Toronto, ON) – HANDWRITTEN, the debut album from Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes, has today debuted at #1 on both the Canadian and US Soundscan charts. This impressive debut makes Shawn the youngest artist in nearly five years to have a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart in the US. HANDWRITTEN was released on April 14 via Island Records / Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. “Stitches”, Shawn’s latest single off the album, is at Canadian radio now. Before the release of HANDWRITTEN, Shawn challenged fans last month to turn his certified 2X Canadian platinum hit “Life of The Party” into his biggest music video premiere. They responded in force, and in its first week, the clip surpassed two million Twitter mentions. In turn, fans were rewarded with the early release of HANDWRITTEN, and the album was moved up to April 14 (from April 28). The album also includes the platinum single “Something Big”. It follows the release of the video for “Never Be Alone”, which reached #1 on iTunes upon release. That #1 accomplishment joins Shawn’s string of #1 milestones including the #1 debut of “Life of the Party” on iTunes, the #1 debut of THE SHAWN MENDES EP on the Canada Digital Albums chart, as well as today’s #1 debut of HANDWRITTEN. Shawn, hailed as “Music’s First Vine Star” by Billboard, and one of Time Magazine’s most influential teens of 2014, was also crowned “The real deal” by Teen Vogue. Shawn transitioned from teen viral online sensation to full-fledged industry best-seller when his videos were discovered online by manager Andrew Gertler.
