"a punchy, swaying alternative rock-flavored tune aurally centered on their innate ability to craft an insatiable groove" - PopMatters

17 November 2017 (Toronto, ON) – Irish four-piece The Academic have shared their new single, "Why Can't We Be Friends?" – a sleek, funk-infused tune about a volatile romance. Listen HERE.

The new song is another taste from their debut album Tales from the Backseat, out January 12 on Downtown/Interscope/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. The album has earned early raves from The Independent, Salon, V Magazine, Uproxx + more. Pre-order Tales from the Backseat HERE.

"Bear Claws", the album's lead single, climbed to viral fame last month when the band discovered a way to "hack" the natural time delay in Facebook's livestreams to create an audio loop pedal. The video got over 1.5 million views in less than a week. Check it out here.

Tales from the Backseat caps a whirlwind stretch for the band who less than two years ago had scarcely seen the outside of their rural hometown in the Irish midlands. In addition to opening for Pixies, Noel Gallagher, Cage the Elephant, and The Strokes at Hyde Park, the band has since sold out a number of headline shows across Ireland, the UK, and Europe, and have racked up millions of Spotify plays - all with just a 5-song EP to their name. The band just wrapped up a run of tour dates with Judah & the Lion and will be embarking on their first-ever headline tour next year. Dates to be announced soon.
