TORONTO MUSIC SENSATION NOW A GLOBAL CITIZEN WITH CHART SUCCESS IN EUROPE AND THE AMERICAS

08 APRIL 2016 (Toronto, ON) – Toronto-based breakout artist Alx Veliz announces the April 22 release of his Love Has No Language EP via Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. This six-song collection follows the November release of his debut single, a collaboration with producer Medy Landia, Dancing Kizomba - the internationally-charting call to the dancefloor which premiered with Billboard.com and has racked up 1.5 million YouTube views and 19+ million Spotify spins in these last months. Kizomba (Angolan word for party) is a key component of a dance movement that began in Angola and is a worldwide phenomenon, characterized by a slower and more romantic rhythm. The story of Alx Veliz is an uncommon one. Making headway as a producer and songwriter for other artists, he was prodded to centre stage on the strength of Dancing Kizomba, which his A&R team declared couldn’t be sung by anyone else. What follows is the stuff of so many a Cinderella story; the foreign-based labels (who now watch Canada with ever-greater interest) hear this new voice and Veliz finds himself inking a global deal with the Universal Music Group (Canada, Universal Music Latin, Island, and Mercury). Veliz now has a well-worn passport and more songs which to pack in his carry-on. Veliz has been making and producing music since childhood and has toured alongside some of music’s biggest stars. Now set to emerge on a global scale with releases in the US, Europe, Latin America, Australia, the UK and more, he’s embracing the overnight success that was years in the making. “It took me a long time to find my sound because my influences are so diverse,” he says, listing everything from samba and salsa to reggae, hip-hop, and the king of pop, Michael Jackson. Drawing on a myriad of musical styles and eras, Veliz’s international appeal comes from his savvy combination of dance floor-filling pop and smooth Latin grooves that underpin a sound with substance, which sets him apart from other artists in his genre. On stage, Veliz is just as comfortable surrounded by a full band as he is with a DJ, or even solely a guitar to accompany his velvet-smooth vocals. Regardless of the setting, it’s about sharing something unforgettable. “Every time I perform, I leave everything on the stage,” he says. “I want to make sure it’s an experience they remember, and that they need to feel again.” Next week, Veliz heads to Spain for a string of concerts supporting the already Gold-certified Dancing Kizomba single in that territory and road-testing his new EP before Canadian dates to come in May.
