BRAVE SHORES RELEASE FIRST “HALF LIVE” EPISODES
13 JULY 2018 (Toronto, ON) – Released today, Canadian synth-pop band Brave Shores have invented a new category of live performance, and they’re showcasing it in a 10-part video series they call Half Live. The series blends the joy, excitement, and limitations of a band's live recording with the untamed possibility of post-production creation, colliding what’s typically locked-in with a limitless play of afterthought. That “half-live” concept is reflected in the filmmaking as well. Teamed up again with director Luca Tarantini (Cult Kids, Magic Man), an improvised multi-camera shoot captures the band’s live performance with practical effects like laser pointers, crystals, mirrors, and magnifying glasses. The editing just like the audio imbibes additional layers post-performance to create a kaleidoscope of film and music working in harmony. It’s about collaborating with your limitations, all with a unique visual style.
"We want it to feel like some weird broadcast," says Luca, “I’m editing on a clunky, dying 1980’s video mixer. It just mangles anything you pump through it. It has a life of its own."
"If I were just to touch up, or tune, or double something of a live recording, like the snare drum, I'd feel like I was cheating,” said. Jay, “but here we can take the liberty to re-imagine arrangements and parts of the songs, and the layers start to add up, and the whole thing changes. Being locked into a live performance and colouring all over it is very, very fun."
They say the series holds a secret, similar to a numbers station.
About Brave Shores:
Brave Shores is a Toronto based synth-pop band that broke onto the scene with their infectious pop hit "Never Come Down". Chasing the success of that song, originally intended for a commercial, the band has evolved to become something of much more substance. Their new album "La Hoo La La" is being released in 2 parts, and proves a deeper and all around more mature body of work. Not straying far from the synth-pop genre, Brave Shores weaves together layers and layers of synthesizers, guitars, drum machines and vocals through thoughtfully crafted songs that range from loud dance-synth jams, to chill and vibey space-mall feels. The band has shared the stage with some of Canada’s most talented acts and have played the country’s best festivals including the 2014 Pop Montreal Festival, Field Trip, WayHome Music & Arts and Rifflandia.
