The track blends a soft bassline and airy harmonies over a doo-wop-inspired beat. His vocals move gently, carrying emotion through layers of synths. That feeling builds into a catchy, confessional chorus about the uncertainty and anxiety of a relationship on the verge of ending, as he admits, “I’m losing my mind, ‘cause you said you need time. Girl, take your time. I’ll give you space, a brief intermission.” The visualizer reflects this tension, showing a series of lonely moments of Charlie caught in that emotional state.
Speaking about the song, Charlie says, “‘Space’ is a raw, vulnerable song about falling out of love. It captures that in-between moment before the end, when you’re coming down from the high of what the relationship once was.”
“Space” follows previous release “Never Do.” Sampling T-Pain’s 2005 hit “I’m Sprung,” “Never Do” highlights the joy and humour of falling hard.
