04 NOVEMBER 2022 (TORONTO, ON) - Deutsche Grammophon and Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company unveils Iconic, a new album by genre-defying and multi-award-winning violinist David Garrett. Inspired by the legendary violinists whose dazzling showpieces and heart-melting melodies he fell in love with as a child, Garrett has recorded works by Bach, Dvořák, Gluck, Kreisler, Mendelssohn and Schumann, among many others. He is accompanied by his guitarist Franck van der Heijden – who also conducts the players of Orchestra The Prezent – as well as being joined in duet arrangements by his former teacher Itzhak Perlman, star tenor Andrea Bocelli, flautist Cocomi and trumpeter Till Brönner.

Iconic is available digitally and on both CD and vinyl (2 LPs). A deluxe CD version contains three bonus tracks, Paganini’s stunning Moto perpetuo among them, while the digital album features the additional bonus of Kreisler’s Schön Rosmarin. All the works are presented in brand-new arrangements for violin, guitar and orchestra realised by Franck van der Heijden and David Garrett.

As a young musician, Garrett immersed himself in the recordings of violinists such as Zino Francescatti, Arthur Grumiaux, Jascha Heifetz, Fritz Kreisler and Yehudi Menuhin. Captivated by a particular aspect of their repertoire as well as their musicianship, he wanted to record many of the popular encores and other miniatures they made their own. Iconic presents more than 20 atmospheric short works, in a wide range of styles, starting with Mexican composer Manuel Ponce’s Estrellita. Its programme of unforgettable melodies also includes Saint-Saëns’s The Swan and Danse macabre; Foster’s Jeanie with the light brown hair; Raff’s Cavatina; Fauré’s Après un rêve; and the central Largo of the “Winter” Concerto from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Garrett teams up with Andrea Bocelli in Schubert’s Ave Maria; Itzhak Perlman in Shostakovich’s Prelude; Japanese flautist Cocomi in Debussy’s La fille aux cheveux de lin; and German trumpeter Till Brönner in Dinicu’s virtuosic Hora staccato. Iconic is the perfect tribute to the violinist’s idols and to music that will delight today’s listeners just as it did the audiences of a century ago.

David Garrett began playing violin at the age of four. He made his stage debut at ten and became the youngest artist ever to sign to Deutsche Grammophon just three years later. By his mid-teens he had built a stellar solo career and recorded Paganini’s 24 Caprices. He subsequently enrolled at New York’s Juilliard School as one of Itzhak Perlman’s first students. He has played with many of the world’s leading orchestras and conductors and reached new audiences around the globe with concerts that include rock anthems, classical sonatas, solo showpieces and film themes. His autobiography, Wenn ihr wüsstet (“If you only knew”), was published earlier this year.
