Debut Single “Issues” Approaching 1 Billion Streams Worldwide

Nominated for “New Artist of the Year” at the American Music Awards

20 OCTOBER 2017 (Toronto, ON) – Today, global breakthrough artist Julia Michaels joins Justin Bieber and BloodPop® for the official remix of their smash hit “Friends”—which she co-wrote. The original version on the song, released earlier this year via Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company, is already approaching 250 million Spotify streams.

Michaels shows no signs of stopping or slowing down as we approach the end of 2017. Her debut single “Issues” has now been streamed nearly 1 billion times worldwide. This week, she graces the cover of Billboard Magazine’s GRAMMY Preview issue as one of the magazine’s picks for “Best New Artist.” Check out the full story here.

Recently, she picked up her very first nomination at the American Music Awards in the category of “New Artist of the Year.” Earlier this week, she took over television as the subject of an episode of ABC’s Nightline. In the piece, the artist dives into her life, incredible journey as a songwriter, and what’s next between performing a powerful medley of anthems she’s written, including the breakthrough solo smash “Issues” and more. Watch ABC’s Nightline profile here.

Her touch and influence can quite literally be felt in every corner and crevice of pop music. Michaels just joined forces with Maroon 5 for “Help Me Out”, a new song from their forthcoming album which she not only cameos on but co-wrote. Already, it’s racked up over 10 million Spotify streams and counting. She also wrote and features on the next Clean Bandit’s new single “I Miss You”, out next Friday, October 27 and lent her writing talents to new music from P!nk and Jessie Ware. Up next, Michaels will perform on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on October 23 and stop by MTV’s TRL on October 24.

In addition to her first American Music Award nod, Michaels recently received two nominations for MTV’s EMAS (Best New Artist and Best PUSH Artist), which adds to a growing list of achievements including nominations from the MTV VMAS (Best New Artist), Billboard Music Awards (Top Covered Artist), Teen Choice Awards (Choice Song: Female and Choice Breakout Artist), Radio Disney Music Awards (The Freshest) and more. Meanwhile, The Music Business Association (Music Biz) recognizes her with a “Breakthrough Artist Award” during its Awards Luncheon on May 17, 2018.

Michaels is also quickly becoming an undeniable live presence. She will be performing at Live In The Vineyard (Nov 3) in addition to hitting up Australia and New Zealand with Shawn Mendes, Jingle Ball stateside, and supporting Niall Horan on his 2018 European tour.

Michaels quickly cemented herself as the biggest global breakthrough artist of 2017 with the release of her multiplatinum-selling debut single, “Issues”.  Certified double platinum by the RIAA, with worldwide consumption approaching 7 million, “Issues” is the best-selling song by a new artist released in 2017, according to Nielsen Music. It is also the highest on-demand audio streaming song by a debut artist this year. As a songwriter, she has co-written seventeen titles that have charted on the Billboard Hot 100, eleven of which have hit the Top 40, including "Issues".

This Summer, Michaels released Nervous System, her self-professed debut “mini-album.”  Upon its release, the seven-song set soared to #2 on iTunes’ US Top Pop Albums Chart. Prior to making her debut as a solo artist, Michaels became one of pop music’s most in-demand songwriters, co-writing a string of Billboard Hot 100 hits alongside Justin Tranter including smashes like Justin Bieber’s “Sorry”, Nick Jonas ft. Tove Lo “Close”, Selena Gomez’s “Good for You” [feat. A$AP Rocky] and “Hands To Myself”, Hailee Steinfeld “Love Myself”, Britney Spears “Slumber Party”,  Gwen Stefani’s “Used To Love You”, and Linkin Park’s “Heavy”. Recently released works include Selena Gomez’s “Bad Liar”, Ed Sheeran’s “Dive”, John Legend’s “Surefire”, Justin Bieber & BloodPop®’s “Friends”, with titles on Jessie Ware and P!nk’s newly released albums. The cumulative worldwide stream count for songs Michaels has co-written exceeds 10 billion to date.
