“The indie rocker's music is marked by his compassionate, conversational lyricism and grounded, grungy sound.”  — NPR

“The rising alternative artist.” — Billboard

“Some songs were rooted in melancholy, a slow burn for the audience, while other tunes incited screaming and head banging. The banter in between was full of honest exchanges between Carpenter and his fans — a catharsis for him, for his audience and maybe even for Anchorage.” —  Anchorage Daily News

26 JANUARY 2024 (TORONTO, ON) –  Medium Build, the queer singer-songwriter born Nick Carpenter, shares “Crying Over U”, his new song & official video. “Crying Over U'' is gorgeous and singular — it’s a song about facing yourself & embracing seemingly inescapable feelings, with Nick’s vulnerable lyrics and gravelly but soft voice at the helm. This song marks a pivotal time for Medium Build who recently made the move from Anchorage, Alaska, where he became a local celebrity and hometown hero, to Nashville, moving closer to his southern roots and dedicating himself to his musical career. “Crying Over U” offers a glimpse at what Medium Build has in the chamber for 2024. Check out the official video, directed by Harrison Shook, HERE, and listen to the song HERE.

On the song, Medium Build says:

“This song is about realizing you have some feelings you were hiding from. Or actually I think it’s more about having desires you know aren’t good for you. I spend so much of my life avoiding feelings; eschewing desire to avoid discomfort and pain. But here we are in this song realizing I am riddled with urges. Filled up to the brim with feelings and longings. wanting people who aren’t good for me. Aiming for success in music which seems guaranteed to destroy me. This song is about fame and old flames. About family curses. About the absolute loneliness of desire.”

“Crying Over U” arrives as Medium Build looks forward to supporting singer-songwriter Holly Humberstone across sold out dates in the EU/UK in February and March. This week, Medium Build wraps up a run of sold-out hometown shows in Anchorage, Alaska. In April, he will support country star Tyler Childers at sold-out arena shows in California. He was recently announced to perform Bonnaroo 2024 and will embark on headlining dates in the spring. Please see all Medium Build tour dates here. Medium Build was recently honoured on NIVA’s 2024 Live List and landed a coveted spot on Zane Lowe’s Artist To Watch in 2024 list.

The Medium Build style is open-ended, playing with acoustic and electronic textures in equal measure. He can inspire you to get down like a dancefloor messiah, with an effortless funkiness underlined by his sensitive falsetto, but the hushed whisper he sometimes sings in makes you feel like you’re the only one in the room. His voice aches with a trembling vulnerability, and there’s intentionality and emotional resonance in every word he sings. His work eagerly draws outside the clear lines of genre binaries, informed by his own personal exploration of queerness and sexual identity, drawing from classic country, ‘80s new wave, and emo in equal measure.
