“re:member” Features Arnalds’ Ground-Breaking Stratus Piano Software

06 April 2018 (Toronto, ON) – Icelandic BAFTA-winning artist, composer, musician and producer Ólafur Arnalds has unveiled his new track, “re:member”, and accompanying music video today via Mercury KX/Decca/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. The song features Arnalds’ ground-breaking new software, Stratus, which transforms the piano into a unique new instrument. Arnalds will be performing his Stratus Pianos across the world later this year, including a sold-out date at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Listen to “re:member” HERE.

The Stratus Pianos are two self-playing, semi-generative player pianos and the centrepiece of Arnalds’ new works. The custom-built software controlling the pianos is the result of two years of work by Arnalds and audio developer Halldór Eldjárn. The algorithms generated from Stratus also helped create the innovative artwork for “re:member”.

In addition to the Stratus Pianos, Arnalds’ uplifting new music also features a string quartet, synths, electronics, and drums, with beats co-produced by Bngrboy. It flows from beautiful piano chords to shimmering string harmonies into a thrilling electronic finale.

The music video, which was shot by Icelandic director Thora Hilmarsdottir, provides a new insight into the music. Arnalds says, “The video touches on elements of masculinity and how men communicate their feelings. But also the hope and joy we can find in each other when we manage to connect with each other or something that we share.” Watch the official music video HERE.

The Stratus Pianos are predominantly a compositional tool which act as a catalyst for creation and inspire a change in the artistic process. They give instant feedback that jolt the composer’s creative thinking and force him to make new, often surprising, creative choices. Playing the piano then becomes playing with the piano!

In a live setting, the pianos are an integral part of the performance due to their generative nature – every time they are played has a different outcome, making every performance entirely unique.

Arnalds will be unveiling the Stratus Pianos later this year as part of a huge worldwide tour – the first in three years – which includes a performance at London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall. The show sold out within days, off the back of a single social post from Arnalds. His performances will bring together past, present, and brand-new material in a fresh light.
