16 January 2026 (Toronto, ON) - Today, emerging singer, songwriter, and pianist Elysia Biro announces her debut EP Running From Nothing alongside the release of her new single “Gentleman Blue” via Universal Music Canada and Deutsche Grammophon. Releasing April 24th, Running From Nothing was written by Biro over the past couple of years in multiple countries as she experienced new beginnings and developed her signature sound.
“In the writing of this music, I have drawn deeply from my roots – building each song around the core of a jazz trio or solo piano,” says Biro. “These songs are a true expression of different parts of myself. They are a reflection of how I have changed through the years, shaped by the varied landscape of life on Vancouver Island, England, and now Los Angeles. Each song is an epiphany – small truths revealing themselves. Together, they form a series of letters to my younger self: glimpses of the heartache and joy that would unfold over time, and how each realization would slowly lead me to who I have become today.”
Released today, “Gentleman Blue” is the third single from Elysia Biro’s upcoming debut EP, following “Just Wait A Minute” and “Wish I Were Better”, all of which were recorded at the legendary Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles. “Gentleman Blue” has a freeing, danceable groove that was inspired by an experience Biro had on her birthday. “I’ve always worried about getting older, even back when I was 5 or 6 years old,” she shares. “I always feel weird around my birthday but this year, I saw this beautiful older woman dancing like she didn’t have a care in the world, and I was inspired to write a song about incredible, powerful women who have embraced getting older. I wrote about the realization that we are all growing, and embracing the privilege it is to grow. It felt like a relief somehow, to let a bit of that worry go.”
Written by Biro on bass instead of her usual piano, “Gentleman Blue” is textured with both electric and upright bass, drums, organ, upright piano, alto sax, synthesizer, acoustic guitar, and a Wurlitzer electric piano. “What is interesting (and challenging) about this song is it has a very repetitive chord structure,” Biro says. “This necessitates a creativity around layering for the song's arrangement. I also wanted the verses to feel relaxed in terms of timing in order to capture the feeling of this enthusiastic woman who was completely carefree.
Since the release of her debut single “Just Wait A Minute” in September, Elysia Biro has already earned 3.5 million streams as anticipation for her debut EP continues to build. With two breakout performances in England at Cadogan Hall and the London Jazz Festival, and recognition from publications such as The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard Canada, Elysia is quickly garnering attention for her refined musicianship and live performance.

Raised in the wilds of Vancouver Island and classically trained in piano, 26-year-old Elysia Biro (pronounced Eh-lee-sha Bee-row) is a technically gifted singer, songwriter, and pianist. At 13, inspired by the genre’s improvisational free form, she taught herself how to play jazz by ear and began writing her own music. After graduating high school at 16, Biro earned her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies for piano and voice before moving to England to complete her Master’s of Music degree at the University of York.
Citing jazz and folk luminaries such as Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Norah Jones, and Joni Mitchell among her greatest influences, Biro honours both tradition and the possibilities that unfurl when exploring new forms. Much like her contemporaries Laufey, Olivia Dean, and Lizzie McAlpine, Biro’s music resonates with younger audiences yearning for expressive artistry in the form of jazz-and-classical-inspired pop music. Biro’s introspective songwriting, distinct soulful vocals, and skilled musicianship represent a timeless alliance not only of genres, but generations.
