(October 11, 2011 - TORONTO) - Multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated UK band Snow Patrol has set January 10th as the official release date for their new [sixth] studio album FALLEN EMPIRES. Snow Patrol will perform Monday, January 9th on CBS's The Late Show with David Letterman. Anticipation is building for FALLEN EMPIRES, the band's first new studio album in more than three years. The first single, "Called Out in the Dark" includes guest guitar spot featuring Troy Van Leeuwen of Queens Of The Stone Age and is available on iTunes now. Watch the video. With a history of 11 million album sales and hit singles around the world, the Glasgow-based, Irish-Scottish Snow Patrol - singer Gary Lightbody, guitarist Nathan Connolly, bassist Paul Wilson, drummer Jonny Quinn, and keyboardist Tom Simpson - settled into California for the writing and recording of FALLEN EMPIRES. Work began late-2010 out in the Mojave Desert at Joshua Tree's Rancho De La Luna Studios, then moved to a beachfront house in Santa Monica known as Eagles Watch. Backing vocals on one track were drawn from the south central L.A. Inner City Mass Gospel Choir of Compton. Finally, the band hunkered down at long-time collaborator Garret 'Jacknife' Lee's Hacienda in Topanga Canyon, a former hippy commune that was once home to Woody Guthrie and Neil Young. In addition to Van Leeuwen, R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe provided lyrical support, and eclectic Los Angeles singer-songwriter Lissie contributed vocals to four tracks. "We wanted to make a massively ambitious record," says Lightbody, "a record unlike any other we've made before… We started writing songs that were more playful, even rawer than before - we were brave enough to do what we wanted as a band, rather than what convention dictated to us. It was tough at times, we were out of our comfort zone for most of it, but I think it's given us a great album." After two UK-only album releases on the indie Jeepster label - Songs For Polarbears in 1998, and When It's All Over We Still Have To Clear Up in 2001, Snow Patrol finally broke through to global audiences over the course of their next three albums. 2003's Final Straw spun off the massive #5 UK single "Run," which had the distinction of being covered by Leona Lewis and other UK artists. Final Straw achieved gold selling status both in Canada & the U.S. Snow Patrol's next album, Eyes Open (2006) exploded onto the scene, powered by a career-defining worldwide Top 10 single and video, "Chasing Cars," nominated for a Grammy Award as Best Rock Song. Eyes Open doubled Final Straw's sales, attaining platinum status in Canada. FALLEN EMPIRES establishes Snow Patrol as a band big on experimental ideas as well as stadium sized anthems. "I've always wanted to make an album that could rank with the ones that inspire me," Lightbody says, "and hopefully this one will. I'm really proud of this album. Listening to it thrills me and that is a beautiful thing indeed."
