UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP’S GLOBAL CLASSICS & JAZZ LABELS EARN 16 GRAMMY® NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2024 AWARDS

MULTI-GRAMMY WINNER JON BATISTE RECEIVES 6 NOMINATIONS INCLUDING ALBUM OF THE YEAR, RECORD OF THE YEAR & SONG OF THE YEAR

 

 

10 NOVEMBER 2023 (TORONTO, ON) – Universal Music Group’s Global Classics & Jazz labels have achieved a remarkable 16 nominations for the upcoming 66th Annual GRAMMY® Awards, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year for Jon Batiste.

 

Multi-GRAMMY winner and Verve artist Jon Batiste picked up nominations for Album of the Year (World Music Radio), Record of the Year (“Worship”), and Song of the Year (“Butterfly”). The genre-defying album also received nominations for Best Jazz Performance (“Movement 18’ (Heroes)”) and Best American Roots Performance (“Butterfly”). These six nods bring Batiste’s lifetime total nominations to 20, and follows his five wins at the 64th GRAMMY Awards, including Album of the Year for WE ARE.

 

Breakout musician and fellow Verve artist Samara Joy, winner of Best New Artist at the 2023 GRAMMYs, received a nomination for this year’s awards for Best Jazz Performance (“Tight”). Her song “Lush Life,” arranged by Kendric McCallister was also nominated for Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals.

 

Critically-acclaimed artist and fellow Grammy winner Arooj Aftab scored two nominations for Best Alternative Jazz Album (Love in Exile) and Best Global Music Performance (Shadow Forces) for her trio recording with Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaily, also on Verve Records.

 

In the classical categories, there were nominations for two Deutsche Grammophon artists: pianist Yuja Wang was nominated for Best Classical Instrumental Solo for The American Project, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin and The Philadelphia Orchestra were named in the Best Orchestral Performancecategory for their recording of works by Florence Price and William Dawson.

 

Blue Note Records also landed two nominations as guitarist Julian Lage’s album The Layers was named in the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album category, while multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer Meshell Ndegeocello picked up a nod for Best Alternative Jazz Album for her acclaimed Blue Note debut The Omnichord Real Book.

 

Elsewhere, Madison Cunningham was shortlisted for Best American Roots Performance for her song Inventing the Wheel (Verve Forecast), Ólafur Arnalds received a nomination in the Best New Age, Ambient, or Chant Album category for his Mercury KX release Some Kind of Peace (Piano Reworks), and Ashley Kahn’s contribution to Evenings At The Village Gate: John Coltrane With Eric Dolphy (Live) (Impulse! Records/UMe) received a nod for Best Album Notes.

The 2024 GRAMMYs, officially known as the 66th GRAMMY Awards, will take place Sunday 4 February at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
